How To Take Small Talk Deeper

That’s what you’re definitely not going to do because nothing tanks a conversation or relationship like the feeling of being dismissed or discarded. When you’ve just met someone, you can ask them open-ended questions and wait for their answers, roughly 2/3 of the time. The other 1/3 of the time, you respond to their questions and add comments or stories from your life that are relevant to their answers. Almost always, I’ve found that people respond well to honesty and vulnerability. And those that don’t, you didn’t want to spend time with anyway. After you say a sentence or two, follow up with another question to get the other person talking again.

Far from being a distraction, this routine interaction keeps workplace relationships flexible and resilient, especially during stressful periods. Small moments of connection are linked to day-to-day boosts in mood and belonging. In field experiments, brief, friendly interactions with a barista improved positive affect and sense of connectedness compared with a purely efficient transaction. In 2010, psychologist Matthias Mehl and his colleagues recorded snippets of daily life from 79 university students using a device that captured brief sound samples every few minutes. They found that the happiest participants spent less time in small talk and more time in substantive conversation. On the surface, this suggested that happiness and superficial chatter do not mix.

B) Work Meetings & Cross-team Standups

Ask for their opinion on something or what they are up to on the weekend. Give them a chance to think and speak their minds. Show that you trust people by assuming they have the best intentions and that anyone can be a potential friend. Let this be your default view of people unless proven otherwise. We are testing the communication waters and opening the door to others to see if they want to connect with us.

You need a low-stakes question that feels warm, clear and easy to answer. That shift usually happens through one simple move. You ask a question that invites a little more color, a little more feeling, or a little more story. That if you say what’s actually going on, you’ll burden the other person, or seem needy, or make things awkward. Most people carry some version of this, and most of the time it’s wrong. The thing you’re afraid will push people away is usually the thing that draws them closer, because it tells them you trust them.

It’s nice when someone wants to know what you think. It’s also interesting to learn more about what people think and why. Believe me, they will remember that you cared to ask. Here’s an example, “What were you up to this weekend? ” can inspire a more interesting conversation than “Was your weekend good? However, forming a new habit takes time and effort.

Small talk also helps you to get to know others in a casual and non-intimidating way. Interestingly, that same line of research also suggests that we reliably underestimate how good conversations will feel. Small talk is often seen as superficial and lacking depth. Some people prefer meaningful, substantial conversations and find small talk trivial, uninteresting, and thefanfills.com a waste of time.

moving from small talk to real talk

The researchers concluded that this “miscalibration” stems from a tendency to underestimate how interested and caring others will be when we open up. Small talk is often dismissed as meaningless chatter, but in psychological terms it serves a set of vital social functions. It helps us coordinate, build rapport, and navigate low-stakes exchanges that smooth the edges of daily life. Pay attention to any negative judgments that you have about small talk and practice reframing your perspective before you engage with others. Next time you have to mingle, see how this reframe helps you feel more chill, excited, or optimistic about the interaction and the potential outcomes. Learning about someone else is meaningful, and the same applies if they learn something about you.

The trick is to make it feel natural and contextual, not random. Many people bemoan small talk because they “get stuck” in it, Nightingall says, without moving on to deeper conversation. There is potential for small talk to bloom into something bigger. Small talk is not universal in how it’s practiced or valued. In some cultures, silence and restraint are signs of respect rather than social discomfort. Finland, for instance, is well known for its tolerance for quiet pauses and its cultural preference for meaningful over frequent conversation.

Sharing from the personal level invites the other person or people to connect with you at this deeper level. Or instead of questioning your conversation partner, try a statement or observation. Something as simple as “This line is taking forever,” or “Mutual friend’s name makes the best cheese boards,” or “You have the cutest dog I have ever seen” can be an effective entrée to small talk.

If you feel that you’ve messed up while trying to avoid small talk, try not to beat yourself up about it. Remind yourself that you took a risk, and it won’t always work out exactly as you’d like. Try to recognize your achievements in doing something difficult and scary. Even though it’s hard, try not to let it stop you from trying again.

Add A Serious Twist To A Light Topic

Even minimal social exchanges can influence strategic decision-making. Participants who perceived their partner as more extraverted contributed more to public-goods tasks and showed higher trust levels. The simple act of chatting shifted expectations and outcomes. If you’ve ever avoided talking to a stranger because you thought it would be awkward or draining, you’re like most people out there. Psychologists have found that we systematically misjudge how social interactions will feel, and these mistaken forecasts keep us from engaging in moments that could actually make us happier.

When we think of small talk, most often it’s just a way for us to pass time or fill an awkward silence. Smart talk is about asking the right questions and listening closely to what they have to say. This will help you understand their needs on a deeper level, build stronger relationships with them, and form better connections than if all you did was small talk. But without vulnerability in your interactions, there’s little chance of connecting with someone new or deepening an existing relationship. Mehl described small talk as the “inactive ingredient” in a pill. It is not the chemical that creates the effect, but without it, the active ingredient cannot work.

If you subtly check your phone while someone’s talking or scan the room, that will make it less rewarding to speak to you. When meet new people, avoid bringing up politics, religion, and sex. If you jump in and disagree, it could damage your opinion of one another. It can, however, make for interesting conversations after you’ve gotten to know each other. Use them occasionally when you want more elaborate answers.

  • As long as they aren’t obviously preoccupied with something or someone else, you can try saying something and see how they react.
  • These aren’t manipulation tactics—they’re authentic bridges that show genuine interest and create conversational momentum.
  • You are laughing, but there is an opportunity to go one notch deeper with the person next to you.

I often wonder how many of those fleeting chances I’ve missed by looking at my phone rather than choosing to instigate a conversation. “Small talk is about being interested, not interesting,” Abrahams says. If someone asks you what your summer plans are and you have none, instead of saying, “Hmm. Not sure yet,” try saying, “I’m not sure yet, but I’ve been researching a few places in Europe or Asia and am comparing pricing and timing.
